Solar Panel Cleaning FAQ’s
Below are the most commonly asked questions about solar panel maintenance, bird proofing, and solar panel cleaning.
If you have a question that is not answered here, please send us the question via Email or Contact Form
Do my solar panels need cleaning?
Yes. Dirt, debris, paint overspray, falling ash from a bad fire season, and bird droppings build up on your panels and block the sun's rays from reaching. As the build-up continues, you will see a decrease in your solar power production and an increase in your monthly power bill.
How often do I need my solar panels cleaned?
Every 3 to 6 months, depending on several factors:
● How fast dust, dirt, pollen, and debris build-up
● A bad fire season – falling ash on your panels blocks the sun's rays
● Road construction – beware of dirt, dust, and kicked-up rock
● House /Home Improvement construction – paint/concrete/stucco overspray can seriously damage your panels
● Bird infestations – bird poop, nesting in the wires, claw scratches on the panel
● How fast your power bill goes up – If your power bill is spiking,
check how dirty your panels are.
● HOA cleanliness rules – HOAs are getting serious about factoring in solar panel cleanliness as part of the property value
● Selling your home – Clean solar panels improve curb appeal
Can't I hose off my solar panels and call it good?
How does city water hurt my solar panels?
City water is typically hard water that leaves mineral deposits on your panels in the form of streaking and stains. The stains create hot spots in your panel that burn out the solar cells embedded in the panel. In addition to decreasing your solar panels' life, it can invalidate your warranty.
Why can't I use dish soap and a squeegee to clean my panels?
Roofs are hot places. Dish soap dries fast in this hot environment and leaves a hazy film on the panels that reduce your power production. Soap film also creates hot spots in the panels, which cuts their lifespan.
Squeegees are scrape debris like ash, pollen, rock, and dust that scratch your panel's surface. This type of deliberate scratching invalidates your solar array's warranty.
Also, there is no need for a squeegee. The heat of the roof and the sun will dry the panels quickly.
Safety & OSHA-30 Certifications FAQs
Why do you always install a safety roof anchor?
When you mix heights, slopes, water, and electricity, you have a recipe for falls. We always install a safety roof anchor to protect our employees from falls and homeowners/businesses from lawsuits. Installing a permanent safety roof anchor is automatically a part of every service we sell. In fact, per OSHA regulations, we cannot be on a roof without the proper safety gear. If a homeowner refuses to allow a safety anchor, we will not perform the service. The safety of our employees is too important to risk.
Do I get a discount if I have a safety roof anchor already installed?
If you already have a roof safety anchor installed, we automatically give you a discount. It is our way of saying thank you for taking safety seriously!
What is an OSHA-30 certification?
OSHA-30 certification is the highest level of safety certification for solar panels. It means we can work on homes, businesses, solar glass windows, agricultural solar farms, and high rises safely.
Why does OSHA-30 certification matter?
Solar panels are NOT windows. They are sophisticated electricity-producing power plants. You need to know how to be safe around water, electricity, heights, slopes, and roofs. We wanted to create a company that we would want to work for.
We imagined and then built a company that cares about its employees' safety and well-being. Getting all employees trained to the highest safety standards is one way we show we respect our employees.
We want them to enjoy what they do and be safe at the same time. It is just one of the many ways we show we care about our team.
How does OSHA-30 certification protect me?
certification know what they are doing. They also carry heavy general
liability insurance. So if an accident does happen, their insurance pays –
NOT yours.
Bird Issues
I have a bird problem. Can you fix it without harming the birds?
Yes. We offer bird-proofing mesh and bird spike installation that deters the birds without harming them.
What is bird proofing?
Bird proofing adds humane mesh between the solar panels and your roof that birds can’t crawl under and bird spikes. The combination makes your roof uninviting to birds looking for a safe place from predators.
Do bird spikes hurt birds?
Bird spikes are spaced so birds do not have an easy place to land, but it does not hurt them either. The lack of a safe place to land causes the bird to land elsewhere.
Do bird spikes work?
Yes! Bird spike installation works well and doesn’t harm wildlife.
Solar Panels & Snow
Can you produce power in the winter?
Yes. Collecting the sun's rays is not temperature dependent. You only need the rays to get to your solar panel to convert it to a lower power bill.
Do you remove snow from solar panels?
Yes. We safely and effectively remove the snow from solar panels safely and effectively to help you save money all year.
What are snow guards?
Snow guards are claw-like attachments to the eave of your roof. When the snow flows through them, the snow gets broken up into sections. As a result, the snow is not coming down in one sheet that can harm someone or cause property damage.
